George Hopkins was a son of Sir William Hopkins, who was headmaster of Newport School on the Isle of Wight and Charles I's host during his negotiations with the Parliamentarians in late 1648. His petition claims that he and members of his family "endured many long imprisonments" for their support of the monarchy, as well as the loss of their fortune.
