Manuscript copy of George Hopkins' petition to Charles II for reimbursement for the Hopkins family's expenses on behalf of King Charles I in 1648. According to this petition, which may have been submitted in 1662, Charles II had previously granted Hopkins two thousand pounds and an estate, but the grant was never fulfilled due to "the unsettlement" of Ireland. The petition copy is accompanied by copies of 66 "secret letters" written by Charles I in 1648, with names in numerical cipher. Subjects include dispatches, the movements of the king's troops and supporters, possible betrayals by followers, and supplies.

George Hopkins was a son of Sir William Hopkins, who was headmaster of Newport School on the Isle of Wight and Charles I's host during his negotiations with the Parliamentarians in late 1648. His petition claims that he and members of his family "endured many long imprisonments" for their support of the monarchy, as well as the loss of their fortune.
